8 Ways to Spice Up Your Storytelling
Subscribe To The Podcast
Today we are talking about my favorite topic… Storytelling! We are going to talk about simple techniques that we can use to weave into any story to make a bigger impact. It is a funny thing that as much as we talk about our businesses and expertise and immerse ourselves we are not always great at sharing the stories and inspirations that really make up the soul of our business.
By using these simple tips, strategies, and frameworks you are going to start really communicating your story in a way that is going to have an impact and get people leaning in and wanting to learn more from you. This is a sample of content that I have been creating in my Story Pro course for my group workshop and I hope you enjoy it.
We discuss:
- [01:40] We are going to be diving into 8 ways to spice up your storytelling.
- [02:22] Know why you are telling the story. The story that you choose needs to connect with a burning belief you have or a statement you want to make.
- [03:01] You can not expect anyone to be more excited or passionate about what you are doing and what you are sharing than you. So we need to tell the story that lights you up.
- [03:18] Focus on what is interesting to the audience. There needs to be a balance between finding the story that excites you and lights you up and then we need to focus on that story through the lens of what is interesting to the audience.
- [05:30] Understand the shapes of stories.
- [06:53] A common mistake a lot of people make is they will stay too long in the bottom trough or early end of the story.
- [08:14] We need to touch on that bottom moment and then get out of it. A lot of people linger too long in one spot of the story and share too many details and it starts to fatigue our audience. If we stay too long then the audience is going to tune out because it is too heavy for them to handle.
- [09:54] When it comes to speaking, marketing, copywriting, creation, and teaching use threes. Using threes will help you be more precise in a lot of things you're doing.
- [11:24] For most standard presentations use three teaching points.
- [12:08] Think about anywhere you are making lists, use the rule of three to keep your presentations and stories more concise and to the point.
- [13:55] Know your tone and rhythm. A subtle mistake that people make when telling stories if they are inexperienced is that they will keep the same tone and rhythm for the whole presentation.
- [15:55] Take us into the room with just the right details. When you are telling a story about yourself or one of your experiences instead of describing it as something in the past, I recommend telling your stories in the present tense.
- [17:57] You want to use little visceral details. Things that we can smell, hear, see, touch, and taste. Incorporate all of the senses in your stories.
- [19:17] Open hot with your story. A powerful way to tell a story is to open in the middle of the point of highest conflict. The tension immediately grabs the attention and curiosity of your audience.
- [21:45] Connect your story with a big goal or vision.
- [23:47] To create your own BHAG you need to identify a goal worth pursuing. Oftentimes when it comes to these we think too small. Aim for a goal that would take ten years or more to achieve.
- [27:41] As entrepreneurs it is funny as much as we talk about our businesses that we are not exactly great at it despite having so much time and energy invested in doing it.
