Today on the show we are going to be talking about ways that we deceive ourselves that feels like it is doing the right thing. Today we are going to be talking about a specific type of species of brand bullshit that I call noble bullshit. Noble bullshit is something that entrepreneurs will experience at every level of their journey. There are some very common and fairly visible ones at the earlier stages of entrepreneurship that many people experience and there are some more subtle ones that we will get into as well.
Why do I say noble bullshit? A lot of these things feel like you are doing the right thing. It feels like you are doing a good thing so you feel noble when you are lost in this distraction. That is why they are so dangerous because it might feel like the right thing but it is hurting you in the long run.
We discuss:
- [02:27] Noble Bullshit #1: Always thinking you need another certification.
- [05:01] Education is a common trap and it feels noble because our whole lives we have been taught to value education.
- [05:22] If you are using education to distract yourself from being in the uncomfortable place of sitting with the uncertainty, of doing the good work, of believing in yourself and your vision and your project enough to see it through then that is bullshit.
- [05:53] Do not distract yourself with education as a way to feel better and safe and to avoid the challenge and uncertainty that comes with being an entrepreneur.
- [06:10] Noble Bullshit #2: Being busy with nonsense to distract from real work.
- [06:35] One of the most common distractions of this job is actually being lost in the low-value details and the business of your business.
- [06:58] It is hard to know what the right thing to do is all of the time as an entrepreneur. Often the right thing to do in most moments for the entrepreneur is to be pushing the limits of themselves and their business and advancing it. That often feels uncomfortable so they avoid that.
- [09:37] There are so many entrepreneurs that aren’t really making the impact that they want to make and that they could make because they are so afraid to really sit in the role of visionary and craft the vision that you as the leader and everyone that you work with can use to motivate and energize themselves.
- [10:19] This creating vision skill is going to stick with you throughout your entire entrepreneurship career.
- [11:47] One way or another we end up distracting ourselves with busyness and getting lost in the day-to-day of our business work instead of finding what we want to create for our future.
- [13:29] Noble Bullshit #3: Overteaching when you are speaking and thinking you are being generous.
- [15:21] The problem here is that they are thinking about themselves and not the customer instead of thinking about what the customer actually needs.
- [16:20] It is actually a disservice if you blast people with information but don’t give them any way to move deeper with you or go to the next level.
- [18:05] If your potential customer is listening to you on a podcast, summit, or social media, what they need first is their beliefs to shift about what’s possible.
- [18:36] You have to be confident in yourself, in your story, in your programs, and your offer in order to be able to have the courage to dial back your teaching and resist the urge to show them all of the amazing knowledge you have.
- [18:59] Noble Bullshit #4: Calling social media shallow to hide your own fear of using it.
- [20:07] Whatever you're getting on social media is a reflection of what you are asking for in terms of your behavior and responding to. If you behave in a different way with the intention of getting clients, engaging with them in a meaningful way, and creating content that speaks to them you are going to get very different results.
- [22:37] I want to call your attention to the emotion or feeling of righteousness. Righteousness is a sense of certainty combined with this superiority of some kind. In most cases, this sense of righteousness can be very problematic.
