Today on the show we have Matt Gallo. Matt is a former cross-fit who now dedicates his time to helping entrepreneurs a few years into their journey who are experiencing the first signs of burnout or in need of a change go on an adventure, experience nature in a completely new environment, and discover new lessons in leadership and management while out and away from the noise of the day to day life that we all live in.
Today we are going to talk about how unplugging, zooming out from your life, and going on an adventure is one of the best things you can do especially as you become more successful as an entrepreneur. That might sound somewhat counterintuitive to some people who think that you always need to be working harder.
We discuss:
- [02:17] Matt shares his defining moment when he went to a leadership camp through Boy Scouts at the age of twelve.
- [04:54] This was the first time in his life that he remembers feeling imposter syndrome and feeling like he didn’t belong. It sent him on this path for the rest of his life that he wanted to prove that he belonged.
- [06:41] He offers retreats called Fit for Adventure to put people in environments that are unusual and uncertain for them. Fit for Adventure is an opportunity to see what else is possible.
- [07:44] He wants people to recognize what is possible and what potential they have inside that they might have forgotten about or missed.
- [09:53] They recreate this environment of stress that could happen while you are working or building your business.
- [11:25] They teach ten leadership skills that are very valuable to entrepreneurs especially solo entrepreneurs to really start to see opportunity.
- [14:10] He struggled with setting really clear boundaries and sticking to the things that I said that I would do. He knew he needed a break and mentorship.
- [18:09] The first thing he did was take a vacation and that was the first real investment he made in himself.
- [20:34] Money is one resource. Time is another. When you put your money into something you are also committing other resources. The result of committing all of your resources to one thing is usually a pretty good return.
- [23:01] Our perspective affects the choices we make. Investing in ourselves, our health, and our happiness is one of the best ways we can spend money.
- [26:28] Really great entrepreneurs and leaders are constantly in this problem-solving state. They are course correcting at all times and not afraid to make a decision.
- [27:28] It is important to be constantly self-aware and identify what is causing you stress and problems.
- [30:23] Zooming out and pattern breaks are the space entrepreneurs haven’t had but they need. Sometimes things are right there waiting and you can’t see them.
- [30:43] Most of the time people have all the answers they need. It usually takes the right questions at the right time in the right environment to bring out certain things.
- [32:34] Find and identify your style and go all in. Take it to the extreme.
- [35:57] There is only one you! Figure out who you are and share your story.
- [37:48] Find what is right for you and what your purpose is.
