On today’s episode, we have Jamie Wollrab. Jamie is an actor and a voice coach. Today we are really going to get into the definition of what he means by voice. It is not just singing or speaking, but it is mostly a way of being that is really interesting.
I am excited to break down that philosophy with him and to explore the subtle differences between acting and speaking from a stage and where authenticity is in both of those. What can we learn from actors playing a role that can actually allow us to show up and be more authentic on stage. So we are going to explore all of these things with Jamie on the podcast today.
We discuss:
- [02:02] Jamie shares his defining moment about a medicine journey.
- [04:50] He is primarily an acting coach. He also does his own acting.
- [05:16] We all have a purpose.
- [07:49] Acting is always about seeking the truth.
- [09:00] We have all these personas inside of ourselves. We just need permission to be able to embody it.
- [10:02] Any artist or speaker has their note and whatever their flavor is.
- [12:01] Acting gives us a chance to embody parts of ourselves that a lot of us wouldn’t give ourselves the opportunity to.
- [14:43] As a speaker, you want to connect, effect, and elicit something from the audience because they are your scene partner. They have to be what is important.
- [16:08] We have so much power as a speaker using our voice as a tool to elicit an effect from our audience.
- [18:37] Voice work and psychological gestures are even more important over the internet than in real life. We have to convey the gestures with our full body.
- [21:01] Gestures are universal. You can build your body language around your story.
- [22:19] Performative can be authentic.
- [24:51] Most people are terrified to be seen. Walking on a stage is the most courageous act there is.
- [26:42] We live in echo chambers. Bringing people together is so important despite their differences and finding common ground.
- [27:34] Today our ideology is trumping our artistry.
