Today we are going to be revisiting one of my favorite episodes from the archives. This is an interview I did with Garrett Gunderson. Garret is somebody I admire a ton in the business world. He has an incredible approach to money, mindset, financial management, and wealth. He is also an amazing marketer, storyteller, and artist. He brings all of that to his work. He is one of the most unique people in the financial planning space I have ever met. Today I want to share again the interview I did with him a few years back and the amazing video interview that was recorded along with this great audio.
Garrett is the founder of Wealth Factory, a company that has been making big waves and innovation in the financial planning industry especially when it comes to entrepreneurs. It is not just his methods that are unique, Garrett also has a unique and powerful vision which he has built his company around. You can see it in his unique and viral marketing, his highly committed and loyal team, and his own personal energy and creativity in everything he does.
We discuss:
- [03:04] Garrett shares his defining moment. His earliest defining moment was actually in kindergarten.
- [04:58] He launched his first business at the age of fifteen.
- [07:07] He recognized that his initial ambition was a limiting belief.
- [08:40] External validation is never truly fulfilling because it is hard to love yourself if you are looking for other people's approval.
- [09:11] Entrepreneurs should use money as a benchmark but always have a second benchmark for success at a minimum.
- [09:41] Garrett had to stop comparing himself to others and he had to get really clear on what success meant to him and make sure he was creating a game worth winning.
- [12:02] Be more efficient with your money and keep more of what you make. Business owners often overpay on their taxes and interest rates.
- [14:19] It is important to live wealthier along the way.
- [16:24] He is using his hobby of stand-up comedy to be more impactful speaking and make finance less threatening.
- [20:16] At Wealth Factory they are looking to serve the right customer that is willing to do the work.
- [21:33] Garrett shares about his video studio setup and how they create great content.
- [26:45] They have a team of content creators but he reviews things and makes sure the content is in his voice.
- [30:51] His long-game vision is an employee stock option program.
- [32:34] He is building a life he loves by having an organization he loves and he is only doing the things that he really loves and enjoys.
- [33:38] The game changer is hiring the right people.
- [34:49] If you have an amazing vision and a great culture people are seduced by that. People really want to be somewhere where they can really contribute and make a difference.
- [36:13] Hiring the right people allows you to step back.
- [39:22] When you hit a ceiling you can show people how you did it and start improving the industry.
- [41:44] If you know how to get there, it is just a goal. A vision is beyond your reach.
- [45:05] His sole purpose is values, abilities, and passions combined for that vision. It is who we are when we are at our best. Soul purpose is about building a life you love because you’re really contingent and true to yourself.
- [46:57] If you were away for two months, would you still want to come back to what you have created?
- [49:23] You are just one idea or one relationship away from that next prosperity.
