I have just completed an amazing retreat experience with David Munter called the Song of Your Life Retreat. I am interviewing him today to learn a little bit about the genesis and to share the story of what’s unfolded over these last few days during this retreat and how it has played a part in my own life.
David and I are very close. We are good friends and so there is going to be some profanity on this episode. If that is something you are allergic to, I recommend that you skip this one. If that is something that you are okay with, you are in for a delightful experience of understanding your own relationship with creativity, the stories that you have around creativity, and even have a lens about how certain stories with creativity may impact you in other areas of your life. This is a really fun, really unique episode, and you are in for a treat today.
We discuss:
- [02:19] Kyle shares a story from one of his favorite books by one of his favorite authors, Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut.
- [03:09] David shares his defining moment when he was in college.
- [06:29] Kyle got really burned out on music during this time. He stopped doing it and actually started writing much like David.
- [08:16] Fun forward is an event where the primary goal is to have a great experience and have fun.
- [11:01] The origin of the Song of Your Life Retreat actually came from David’s own self-doubt and his own self-hate when it comes to music. The energy of writing music was not coming from a healthy place. He has a desire for success at the expense of that pure creative inspiration.
- [12:30] Being in this space of not really liking music and himself, he got to a point where he had a new lens for music and he realized that he only liked it when it was art and for himself.
- [14:41] Being a marketer, we often need validation as early as possible.
- [16:24] Three things that made the retreat possible were his belief in himself putting it together, belief from others, and a very strong drive to make the retreat amazing.
- [17:11] There are stories that we are telling ourselves about ourselves that are not true. This retreat showed the attendees that we all have this creative potential.
- [20:28] For Kyle it is about making a lot of money or being successful. It is about living a life that is meaningful and that he can be proud of and look back on and say he left nothing on the table.
- [22:49] One of the most important things for David to ask was what was your earliest memory of music that was impactful to you.
- [24:24] Music at its heart is art. The creation of this art is fulfillment.
- [26:01] When you create high art that is a beacon of light for other people.
- [28:52] David shares about the process for naming the retreat.
- [30:39] Whatever beliefs you have is just a different lane in life and that no belief is necessarily true or not however in some lanes you go faster than others towards where you want to go.
- [31:21] David shares about the jingle exercise they did during the retreat. His jingle was about Lysol.
- [34:43] Throughout this year of attending fun-forward events, Kyle has had several opportunities to reconnect with music.
- [37:01] Kyle shares the process of creating the transcendental dance experience that he shared at the retreat.
- [38:24] A theme of the retreat is having a vision and using that to fuel and accelerate your life and what you want to create.
- [41:26] Having belief in myself and others that I trust to believe in me and have the drive is crucial to see things through.
- [43:16] There is nothing wrong with art or creating products. They are both really amazing and they make the world go round. Make sure you have both lanes.
- [44:45] Rule number one is making sure that you are getting enjoyment out of it because if not you will not be able to sustain it.
- [45:01] Anything is possible. Belief+Belief+Drive
