On today’s episode, I am talking with Brandon Fong. He is somebody that I connected with about five years ago in the self-publishing community. In this episode, we get to share both of our adventures since then and how we’ve been developing and honing our skills. Brandon has been focusing on a very cool method that he calls the Magic Connection Method, an email outreach strategy that he has been having a ton of success with creating and opening new doors for him and his business. This is a very deep, highly tactical, and highly practical episode on how you can make better connections, get people opening your cold email outreach, and open the doors for new opportunities for your business in a very big way.
Brandon is an entrepreneur, blogger, world traveler, and professional friend maker. As a double major in Entrepreneurship and Marketing with a Spanish minor, he has managed to keep himself busy. All before his junior year, Brandon launched his first start-up company, acquired $28,000+ in scholarships, studied abroad for a semester in Spain, became the president of UW-Whitewater’s Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization, acquired his Series 6 and 63 investment licenses, maintained a 3.96 GPA and has been featured in Fast Company Magazine, the School for Startups Radio and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
We discuss:
- [02:18] Brandon shares about his defining moment that happened in middle school.
- [03:48] If you want to be successful the number one skill you can have is learning how to be resourceful.
- [05:19] He learned what the power of one connection can really mean for you. Every time he has been looking to get to the next level there has always been one person that has helped him. You are just one connection away from the next level.
- [05:53] Money is not really what it is all about. There are plenty of people that have all the money in the world, but they are miserable on the inside.
- [06:47] Brandon is on a mission to change the global conversation around what success means for an entire generation of entrepreneurs with Seven Figure Millennials.
- [08:35] Kyle is planning an online summit soon. He also incorporates creativity and videos in his emails.
- [10:11] The Magic Connection Method is a three-step process. The whole point of the first email that you are going to use is to simply get them to respond. Often people try to do way too much in the first outreach.
- [12:11] The parts of the process are the hook, the irresistible offer, and the no oriented question.
- [12:56] The whole goal on the first part of the hook is to make it 100% about the person that you are reaching out to. It is about them. It is not about you. The most powerful part that you can leverage is if you have a mutual connection.
- [13:19] The second most powerful part is if you consumed their content, got results, and now you can thank them for that. The goal is to make a genuine connection and show that you actually took the time to learn about them.
- [14:01] You only want to use 1-3 sentences in your hook. If you want to develop a genuine relationship with someone it does require that you do some research on them.
- [16:20] Start by deciding the kind of people you want to develop a relationship with and craft messages to that group of people.
- [18:01] If you are trying to connect with a specific group of people those can be more templated, but the most important part is the first part of the email where you actually develop a relationship with them.
- [18:40] After a quick transition, the next part is the irresistible offer. There is a big difference between an irresistible offer and a convincing offer. The goal of this offer is to get them to lean in.
- [19:28] With an irresistible offer minimize risk, position it so they have a lot to gain, and it is easy for them to say yes.
- [22:54] Can you solve a problem that the person currently has? Can you help them gain more exposure? Can you help them make more money or make their lives easier? How can you frame it in a way that makes it an irresistible offer?
- [25:40] Brandon shares an example of a Magic Connection email he sent.
- [26:36] When you are crafting your irresistible offer, step into who you are reaching out to. What are they thinking? What is their life like?
- [28:26] The whole point of this whole email is can you enter the conversation that is already happening in your prospects’ minds.
- [28:56] The last part of the email is to get them to respond by asking them a question.
- [30:28] No oriented questions work better. No oriented questions start with “Would it be a bad idea if or would it be ridiculous if?”
- [31:20] Just end with the no oriented question. Don’t add anything else.
- [33:26] If your email is not working, the first thing to test is the subject line. The subject line is a condensed version of the irresistible offer.
- [34:38] If you are not following up you’re losing out on a whole bunch of opportunities. The most important thing to understand with follow-ups is that you are not reinventing the wheel. The first follow-up is just bumping it to the top of their inbox.
- [35:43] When you do the Magic Connection Method right you will develop some incredible relationships with people.
- [36:40] Brandon uses Lemlist to send emails and automatically follow-up.
- [38:03] You are just one connection away from the next level. Who has already figured this out and how can I partner with them?
